Swanland Women's Institute |
The WI offers opportunities for all women to enjoy friendship, to learn, to widen their horizons and together to influence local, national and international affairs.
These web pages are intended to both provide women in and around Swanland access to information about the WI, whether they are members or not, also to provide a wider public with a view of an organisation and an area with which they may be unfamiliar. In either case we hope that you find the information of interest. Swanland is situated seven miles west of Hull and nine miles south of Beverley on the edge of the Yorkshire wolds and near the Humber Bridge.

History
Swanland WI celebrated its 50th. anniversary this
year. The first meeting was held in April 1949 when 53 members attended. At this time
Swanland was a small village with very little development. However in the 1960's when the
village began to grow, the membership rose to over 100. Over the past few years, despite
many more houses being built, membership has fallen to 40. This is, we feel, due to the
greater mobility of those who live here, many households having two cars making the
attractions outside the village which were previously difficult to get to much easier. |
Market
| There is a WI Market held each Friday morning from 10a.m. to 11.30a.m. (except January) in The Memorial Hall, Lairgate, Beverley. Three members from Swanland are 'marketeers'. |
