Childrens
In addition there are seven classes for residents only. When the points awarded for these classes are totalled, the winner receives the Millennium Shield. Entries have slowly increased since its beginning in the year 2000.
Whilst many classes remain the same, a new class this year is baking a cake from a set recipe, for men only.
It is hoped that schedules will be available by late June, certainly in time for Swanland Festival and the Open Gardens.

Swanland Show, which originated after the '39 -'45 war, was a grand
affair incorporating classes for agriculture, horticulture, produce and handicrafts staged
in marquees erected around a central arena where events such as horse jumping took place.
The first venue was in the field where Dale Close now stands, it then moved to the field
on which Westerdale is now built.
In the early fifties adverse weather was experienced for three consecutive shows, so the
Show was wound up and the trophies returned to their donors.
In 1979 a small committee with Tony Featherstone- headmaster of the Primary School - as
chairman, revived the Show on a much reduced scale.
At the first committee meeting it was decided that the 'new' Show would be held in
September, and that this Show was to be aimed at local people and therefore prize money
would not be given, but certificates and trophies be awarded instead.
The certificates were designed and printed by local artist Richard Pearson, and trophies
were donated by local residents and organisations.
The first Show in 1979 had 50 classes, with categories for wine, produce, handicrafts, floral art, vegetables, flowers and children's work.

The first Show was a success, so more classes were added in the succeeding years-including
a very popular photography section.
The early Shows were held in The James Reckitt Memorial Hall, but with the increase in
both entries and entrants, a larger venue was required. The Headmistress of the Primary
School - Margaret Adamson - came to the rescue by offering the use of the School and
taking on the role of Show Secretary.
In the early 90's there was a slight hiccup with the retirement of several long serving
committee members, and a fall in the number of entrants in the various classes. However
the appeal for new members was answered and a larger committee was formed. This also
coincided with another change of venue.
The School was most co-operative in staging the Show, but did not posses a hall large
enough to stage all the exhibits. This meant that other class rooms had to be utilised.
When the new St. Barnabas Church was built, it had a hall large enough for our needs.

The new venue has proved a great success. Matching tables covered with white cloths,
screens to display artists' work, titles and class numbers on the tables and printed
exhibitors labels all make the Show more professional.
The number of trophies awarded at the show is now 32, many of these being from the
original show. The newest addition is the Millennium Shield, which is awarded to the
overall points winner of the Residents' Section. Entry is for Swanland residents only, of
any age group. Exhibitors are limited to a maximum of one entry in any or all of the seven
classes in this section.
Committee members: Tony Featherstone (Show Chairman), Roy Wood, Louise Pepper, Jo
Emmerson, Sylvia Dines, Judy Burton, Jean Foster, Steve Johnson, Harry Sidwell, Brenda
Allan, Anne Featherstone, Jean Latter and Paul Neve.
