SWANLAND BOWLING CLUB

The Bowling green was provided for the village by the Reckitt Family together with the Memorial Hall, swings for the children and later the Tennis courts. The grass on the green and the courts were cut by the caretaker for the hall. Originally the caretaker lived in a house behind the pond that went with the job. A new caretakers house was built on Tranby lane, its first occupant was a Mr. Watson.

The Bowling Club was founded around 1926 and as previously stated the Reckitts Trust looked after the maintenance. It occupies a prime position in the village centre, between the pond and Kemp Road with the tennis courts to the south. The club caters for players of all ages but urgently requires younger players. Some senior players whilst still playing at the highest levels become more vulnerable with the passing years. Anyone living in the area who would like to take up the sport of flat green bowling will be welcome. After joining the club they will be given advice and encouragement, training is always forthcoming for new bowlers from the experienced members. As the bowlers become more proficient  it is possible to progress through the minor teams to the senior games, this applies to both male and female members. After paying a joining fee in the first year Swanland Bowling Club enjoys the most reasonable fees in the Yorkshire and Humberside area.
The pavilion is used in the closed season for other activities for instance the U3A's gardening and art groups and bridge clubs.
